In questo gioco di ruolo, con combattimenti a turni, il giocatore deve vestire i panni di un cacciatore di mostri, con lobiettivo di catturarli e farne evolvere la potenza. Tutto questo mentre esplora il mondo circostante seguendo la storia principale, incontrando anche altri cacciatori di mostri, che dovr sconfiggere.Sono tre gli elementi principali che costituiscono il gioco: Combattimento: i combattimenti avvengono con scontri a turni. Il giocatore pu decidere se utilizzare gli attacchi automatici, che caratterizzano ogni mostro, oppure se impartire ordini specifici. Possono essere impiegati fino a sei mostri: tre impegnati nei combattimenti e tre di riserva, che possono subentrare in qualunque momento.Ricerca: durante i combattimenti, il giocatore pu anche decidere di catturare i mostri avversari. Per farlo necessario apportare degli attacchi speciali, che indeboliranno il mostro rendendolo pi vulnerabile alla cattura.Esplorazione: il giocatore pu esplorare tutti i territori nellisola misteriosa, che divisa in otto diverse aree. In questi territori il giocatore sar attaccato a vista da mostri giganti e incredibilmente forti, dai quali potr inizialmente solo fuggire. Solo in seguito sar in grado di tenere loro testa. Lesplorazione avviene grazie a un particolare incantesimo, tipico di Dragon Quest, che consente al giocatore di teletrasportarsi da unarea allaltra.Ci sono cinque diverse modalit di gioco:Modalit Storia / giocatore singolo: la modalit principale, in cui il giocatore deve esplorare lisola, diventare pi potente e andare in soccorso degli altri passeggeri.
