Il quarto episodio della famosa serie Grand Theft Auto ambientato a Liberty City. I giocatori assumeranno il ruolo di Niko Bellic, un immigrato dell'Europa dell'est che arriva a Liberty City sperando di poter ottenere le ricchezze e le opportunit promesse dal cugino Roman, un tipo non troppo sincero. Tuttavia il suo sogno andr in frantumi sin dal momento in cui sbarcher dalla nave e la vera America si presenter davanti ai suoi occhi. Fortunatamente per Niko tutta la ricchezza e la felicit che sta cercando sono disponibili a Liberty City, star a lui trovare il modo per procurarsele... I primi passi lungo le strade di Liberty City, il nome fittizio della citt che come da tradizione riproduce New York, sono stati abbastanza chiarificatori riguardo l'impegno profuso per dare vita ad un mondo credibile: il traffico gode di maggior imprevedibilit e gli automobilisti reagiscono in modo realistico ad incidenti o ingorghi, mentre i pedoni si intrattengono tra di loro sui marciapiedi discutendo e, qualora il giocatore dovesse compiere qualche azione degna di nota, ricordandosi di Nico e riconoscendolo nelle occasioni successive. Impressiona, in positivo, il design degli edifici ed in generale della citt, ora molto pi complesso che in passato con case ben distinguibili l'una dalle altre, anche grazie a graffiti e cartelli pubblicitari, e strutture architettoniche come ponti e sopraelevate ricche di dettagli. Liberty City pi vasta di tutte le altre citt sinora riprodotte, ma senza gli spazi aperti che aumentavano larea espolorabile di San Andreas, ad esempio, senza migliorarne la giocabilit. In altre parole, il team sembra essersi concentrato sul tentativo di ricreare un mondo pi vivo e pieno di dettagli, piuttosto che su un ambiente troppo vasto ma sterile.
