GTA III il terzo capitolo di questa fortunata serie e porta con s numerose novit rispetto a quanto visto in passato. Innanzitutto la grafica completamente 3D, ed il giocatore ha a disposizione anche una visuale in terza persona al livello della strada, oltre alla classica visuale dall'alto in basso che caratterizzava i suoi predecessori. Il gioco ambientato a Liberty City, immensa citt ricreata in modo impressionante e piena di vita. Il giocatore assumer il ruolo di un criminale di basso livello appena sfuggito ad un tentativo di arresto. Essendo un forestiero in questa citt, egli dovr darsi da fare per farsi notare dalle gangs pi potenti per ottenere degli incarichi che daranno luogo alle missioni da portare a termine. Se dimostrerete il vostro valore, di volta in volta vi verranno affidati degli incarichi sempre pi impegnativi, pericolosi, ma anche pi soddisfacenti.Per avere successo durante le missioni potrete usufruire anche di un vasto arsenale di armi, che non avrete subito a disposizione ma vi saranno fornite dai vostri boss prima di partire in missione, oppure potrete recuperarle uccidendo un membro di una gang rivale. Tra le varie armi sono comprese: mazze da baseball, pistole, fucili, mitragliatrici, uzi, bombe molotov, granate, un lanciarazzi ed addirittura un lanciafiamme. Con il fucile da cecchino inoltre potrete passare alla visuale in prima persona e zoomare sulla vittima per colpirla con estrema precisione. Quando sarete disarmati potrete comunque colpire i vostri avversari con pugni, calci e ginocchiate, o investirlo con la vostra macchina!Per muovervi in citt potrete camminare tranquillamente o utilizzare uno dei circa cinquanta veicoli presenti: tra questi ci sono camion, furgoncini, pickup, taxi, ambulanze, auto della polizia, auto sportive ed addirittura imbarcazioni.
